Listing Criteria

OntarioGreenSpec.ca lists products, companies and service providers that have something valuable to contribute to the green building marketplace in Ontario. All listed companies have qualified by meeting at least one of the criteria below.

Service Providers (will be indicated by a hardhat logo in the future)

We list service providers that are located in Ontario and have experience working with products or services in one of the listing categories.

Products

We list products that are either a) local or b) environmentally preferred.

a)     Local (will be indicated by a trillium logo in the future)

We list local products because they minimize the environmental impacts of transportation and support local businesses. There are two tiers of “local” products, which will be distinguished by two colours of the trillium logo.

§  “Local to Ontario” means the service and/or distribution of this product is Ontario-based or available in Ontario;

§  “Local to You” means the product is sourced and manufactured within 800 km of your location. Note that this additional refined layer of “local” is planned for launch in mid-2009.

b)    Environmentally Preferred Products (will be indicated by a sprout logo in the future)

We list products or companies that achieve one of the following:

§  Contain environmentally preferable materials such as: recycled, salvaged, or renewable materials, agricultural waste, Forest Stewardship Council certified wood;

§  Conserve energy, water and other natural resources: renewable energy technologies, energy and/or water conservation equipment and fixtures, products that improve access to sunlight, exceptionally durable products, products that reduce material use;

§  Avoid harmful emissions or pollutants: air quality and filtration technologies, stormwater filtration systems, No-VOC or low-VOC paints, natural materials, alternatives to ozone-depleting products, pesticide-reduction treatments.
